What It Actually Takes to Stay Connected (A Summer Recap)
Here's what it actually takes to stay connected: awareness of your isolation habits, the social skills to change them, and a room full of people practicing it right alongside you.
SOCIAL SKILLSFRIENDSHIPS

Summer always feels like it should be the easy season for connection. The weather is warm, everyone's calendar loosens up a little, and there's this cultural promise that summer means barbecues and pool days and spontaneous hangouts with the people you love. But if I'm honest, this summer taught me (and a lot of you, based on the messages I've gotten) that connection was never actually about the season. It's about the habits we practice no matter what month it is.
Back in July, we spent a lot of time here talking about isolation habits, the quiet little patterns that convince us we're fine on our own when really we're just avoiding the discomfort of reaching out. Things like telling ourselves we're "too busy" when what we really mean is we're scared of being a burden. Or scrolling through our phones at a party instead of walking up to someone new because rejection feels riskier than loneliness. We named those patterns because you can't change what you won't look at, and so many of us had never actually looked at them before.
Then August rolled in and we shifted gears toward social skills, the practical, teachable stuff that actually gets you from noticing a habit to changing it. How to start a conversation with someone you don't know. How to ask a follow up question that makes someone feel truly heard. How to sit with the awkward pause instead of filling it with nervous laughter and an exit strategy. We talked about texting first even when your gut says wait for them to reach out. We talked about showing up to the same place more than once so familiarity has a chance to build.
Here's the thread that connects all of it, and honestly it's the one thing I want you to walk away from this whole summer with. Awareness without action just becomes another thing to feel bad about. And action without awareness usually just repeats the same avoidant patterns in a slightly different outfit. You need both. You need to know what you're doing and why, and then you need the actual tools to do something different.
I think about the people in our community who came to a Filled Cups event feeling nervous, maybe even a little skeptical that a room full of strangers could feel like anything other than exhausting. And then somewhere in the middle of the night, usually over a shared laugh or a surprisingly honest conversation, something shifted. That shift isn't magic. It's the isolation habits and the social skills meeting in real time, in a real room, with real people who are just as nervous as you are.
That's the part that never shows up in a blog post no matter how many words I write. You can read about vulnerability and practice your conversation starters in the mirror all you want, but at some point you have to be in the room. You have to let someone see you order your drink with slightly shaky hands. You have to be the one who says "this is my first time coming to something like this" out loud, and then watch how many people respond with relief because they were thinking the exact same thing.
So as we close out summer, here's my grounded takeaway for you. Connection isn't a destination you arrive at once you've healed enough or gotten confident enough or figured yourself out enough. It's a practice, built one slightly uncomfortable moment at a time, and every single person you'll meet at one of our events is out there practicing it right alongside you.
I'm already dreaming up what September looks like for us, and I promise you it's going to build on everything we've unpacked this summer in a way that feels like the next natural step. I can't give away all the details yet, but I will say this. If July was about awareness and August was about skill, September is about something a little deeper, and I think you're going to feel it the moment we get there.
Until then, consider this your invitation. If you've been reading along all summer nodding your head and thinking "yes, this is exactly what I needed to hear," I'd love for you to come put it into practice with us. Come to a Filled Cups event. Bring your slightly shaky hands and your first-timer nerves and your genuine desire to be known by people. That's exactly who these spaces are built for.
See you there.
